Earls Court Square – Open Garden Squares 2016

I visited Earls Court Square during Open Garden Squares Weekend in June.

‘…This award winning Victorian garden was originally laid out as part of the Edwardes Estate in the 1870s, and was well managed with an almost full-time gardener until 1939.  However in the Second World War the handsome cast iron railings were taken away and five huge emergency water tanks filled the southern half of the garden.  From the end of the War until the early 1970s it fell into disrepair, an overgrown area used as a dump and surrounded by green wire netting.  In the mid 1970s the newly-formed Residents’ Association brought the garden under the 1851 Kensington Improvement Act.  Landscape gardener and resident Christopher Fair designed the present layout…’.

      • No, I didn’t. I am really struggling in London where the snails are relentless, and add to that wind tunnels and shade and I have a tremendous challenge on my hands. In Suffolk the garden changes each year as trees and the hedge grow, and the Japanese Anemones threaten to take over! I have given away dozens of plants by now; not sure what to do with them next.

      • it’s a bad year for snails and I empathise about the shade having gardened for my neighbour with such a challenge – so many plants are sun lovers!

I'd love to hear from you!
