The Olympic Park or The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to give it its full name, is an initiative of the London Legacy Development Corporation to create a new residential, cultural, and business centre in the East End of London around the buildings of the Olympic Games of 2012.
The walkways amongst the gardens stretch out alongside the River Lea.
The beautiful gardens are divided into four climate zones which reflect the natural habitat of those zones: Europe, North America, the Southern Hemisphere, and Asia. The European garden is based on a traditional hay meadow; the North American planting reflects the prairies; the Southern Hemisphere planting was inspired by the vegetation found in the Drakensberg in South Africa; and the Asian planting relfects the vegetation on the edges of the Asian woodlands. This is all good and well, but how do you work out which is which?
This garden is firmly on my visiting list and although I was visiting during Open Garden Squares Weekend I will be returning many more times in the summer and autumn. I am even considering walking the River Lea again!
