My Six on Saturday is planting in parks in Oviedo, and my last offering from Northern Spain. These plantings are in the Park of San Francisco in the city of Oviedo. I enjoyed a walk through the park every day and it was also well-used by local people who strolled there during the day. In the evening people dressed up and did the paseo; children played after school in the late afternoons; and it is a pleasant route from the top of the hill down into the old town. There are lots of large trees in the park but I have picked out some of the smaller plantings.

1.Beds of Cyclamens were flowering under the trees in the Park of San Francisco in Oviedo. These are always such ‘formal’ plants, I feel.

2. In the middle of the park there are Yellow Lilies on a bank where they glowed in the evening light.

3.I think these were Cycads – but perhaps I am wrong…? There was a bank of these near to a path.

4.The Agapanthus looked very good indeed, even though the flowers were over. Their leaves were abundant and shiny and the bright greens make me feel happy!

5. At the park entrances there were prominently placed beds of begonias, this time of the tall variety – so many plants here looked abundantly healthy! I haven’t seen tall bedding begonias before and these worked well.

6. And finally, this is a city which is filled with statues. At the edge of the park I saw these figures amongst flax plants.

Oviedo is a lovely city and the planting here is freer than what I had seen elsewhere. I hope my fellow gardeners enjoy these colourful ideas for planting in parks in Oviedo, and that The Propagator approves!
